The Go-Go's

The Go-Go's are a groundbreaking American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1978, who made music history as the first all-female band that wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts. Fronted by lead singer Belinda Carlisle alongside rhythm guitarist Jane Wiedlin, lead guitarist Charlotte Caffey, bassist Kathy Valentine, and drummer Gina Schock, the group emerged from the LA punk scene to become a defining act of the New Wave era. Their 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat, stayed at number one for six consecutive weeks and yielded massive, hook-driven hits like "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat." Despite battling internal tensions and substance abuse that led to their initial breakup in 1985, the quintet reunited frequently over the decades for successful tours and new music, ultimately cementing their pioneering legacy with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
