American Hostage

MGM+ 7.8 Drama | Crime 2026

In American Hostage, an intense 1970s-set psychological thriller series from MGM+, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter named Fred Heckman (Jon Hamm) finds his life permanently upended during a live broadcast. He is suddenly thrust into the center of a high-stakes, life-or-death crisis when an enraged gunman, Tony Kiritsis (Giovanni Ribisi), takes a mortgage executive hostage with a shotgun wired to his neck. Demanding to tell his side of the story live on Heckman's popular news program, Kiritsis turns the broadcast into a gripping, 63-hour media spectacle. Based on a harrowing true story and adapted from a popular scripted podcast, the eight-episode series explores the fragile boundaries of journalism, police negotiations, and public manipulation as a regular reporter becomes the only line of communication keeping a hostage alive.

In February 1977, an Indianapolis man named Tony Kiritsis wired a sawed-off shotgun to his mortgage broker's neck, marched him through the city streets, and demanded to air his grievances live on the radio. American Hostage turns that surreal 63-hour standoff into an eight-episode crime drama on MGM+, developed by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers. Jon Hamm stars as WIBC news director Fred Heckman, an everyday radio journalist suddenly thrown into the role of prime negotiator with thousands of listeners tuned in. Giovanni Ribisi plays Kiritsis with unhinged, desperate intensity, supported by a cast that includes Kristoffer Polaha, William Jackson Harper, and Mireille Enos.

To sustain the tension of an ordeal that unfolds mostly over telephone wires and live microphones, composer Robert Duncan built a score driven by steady percussion, ticking analog pulses, and sharp brass swells. Rather than drowning out the dialogue, his music channels the nervous energy inside the WIBC radio booth and the police command vans parked outside. The production also captures the late-seventies period feel through Duncan's fast-paced "Newscast" cue and official title themes, paired with vintage cuts like Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera and their 1969 track "There's A Hole In My Pocket."

American Hostage Season 1 Trailer Songs

The standalone 17-track score album composed by Robert Duncan chronologically maps the escalating crisis as it unfolds minute by minute inside the radio station. Standout cues like "Surveillance Van" and "Leveling With Tony" emphasize the quiet, suffocating tension between phone negotiations, blending low-register strings with analog synth pulses that mirror the physical exhaustion of both police and hostage Dick Hall. Closing out each broadcast, the melancholic "American Hostage End Title" cuts sharply through the media circus surrounding the apartment building, grounding the spectacle in the grim psychological toll the standoff took on everyone caught in Kiritsis's orbit.
