John Cardon Debney (born August 18, 1956) is a prolific American composer and conductor renowned for his versatile work across film, television, and video games. The son of a Disney Studios producer, Debney grew up in Glendale, California, and earned his degree in music composition from the California Institute of the Arts. He began his professional journey at Disney, eventually becoming a frequent collaborator with the studio on projects ranging from theme park attractions like Phantom Manor to hit films such as Hocus Pocus and The Jungle Book. Debney’s career is marked by high-profile scores for diverse films like Elf, Iron Man 2, and Sin City, though he is perhaps best known for his Academy Award-nominated score for Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. A multi-Emmy winner and the youngest recipient of ASCAP's Henry Mancini Career Achievement Award, he continues to be one of Hollywood’s most sought-after composers, often conducting his own music with the world’s leading orchestras.
