Directed and co-written by John Carney, the musical comedy-drama follows a struggling wedding singer named Rick who unexpectedly bonds with Danny, a fading former boy-band star, during a late-night jam session. Their friendly creative partnership shatters when Danny takes one of Rick's heartfelt original songs and transforms it into a massive global hit, sparking a fierce rivalry over artistic credit. To reflect the energetic, stadium-ready pop style of Danny's new career, the film incorporates infectious upbeat tunes, including synth-heavy versions of the contested track. These high-energy musical sequences are paired with humorous background tunes that represent Rick’s modest life performing classic cover songs at local receptions.
