The Smiths

Formed in Manchester in 1982, The Smiths—vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce—became icons of 80s British indie rock. Known for jangly guitars, witty, melancholy lyrics, and a rebellious anti-synth sound, they produced classics like The Queen Is Dead before breaking up in 1987.
