The Goo Goo Dolls
Formed in 1986 in Buffalo, New York, by guitarist John Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac, and original drummer George Tutuska, the Goo Goo Dolls began as a scruffy, punk-influenced cover band originally known as the Sex Maggots. After evolving through a gritty underground phase, they achieved a major mainstream breakthrough with the 1995 hit "Name". Their global superstardom was solidified by the 1998 anthem "Iris," which was written for the City of Angels soundtrack and spent a record-breaking 18 weeks atop the airplay charts. Over nearly four decades, the band transitioned into a more polished, melodic rock sound with multi-platinum albums like Dizzy Up the Girl, selling over 15 million records worldwide and earning four Grammy nominations. Today, the group remains a staple of the rock scene as a duo consisting of founding members Rzeznik and Takac.
