Teena Marie

Teena Marie (born Mary Christine Brockert) was an influential American singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose exceptionally powerful, soulful soprano vocals earned her the title "Ivory Queen of Soul". Born on March 5, 1956, in Santa Monica, California, she grew up in Venice, deeply immersed in R&B and funk culture before signing with Motown Records in 1976. Mentored by Rick James, she achieved massive chart success with hits like "I'm a Sucker for Your Love", "Square Biz", and "Lovergirl", initially surprising audiences who assumed she was African American due to her distinctive vocal depth. Remarkably, she was a fierce creative force who wrote, arranged, and produced nearly all of her own material, paving the way for female autonomy in the studio and securing four Grammy Award nominations before her passing on December 26, 2010.
