Richard Wagner
Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813–1883) was a revolutionary German composer, conductor, and theatre director who fundamentally transformed Western music through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), a synthesis of music, poetry, drama, and visual arts. Born in Leipzig, his early career was marked by financial instability and political exile following his involvement in the 1849 Dresden uprising. Wagner is best known for his monumental operas, which he called "music dramas," characterized by complex textures, rich harmonies, and the innovative use of leitmotifs—recurring musical themes associated with specific characters or ideas. His most significant works include the epic four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, the tragic Tristan und Isolde, and his final masterpiece, Parsifal. To fully realize his artistic vision, he established the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, a dedicated opera house that still hosts the annual Bayreuth Festival.
