Pretenders
Formed in London in 1978, The Pretenders are a seminal British-American rock band that bridged the gap between punk, new wave, and pop-rock. Led by the uncompromising vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter Chrissie Hynde, the original lineup featured lead guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, bassist Pete Farndon, and drummer Martin Chambers. They achieved instant stardom with their 1980 self-titled debut album and the hit single "Brass in Pocket". However, the band was soon devastated by the drug-related deaths of Honeyman-Scott and Farndon within a year of each other in the early 1980s. Hynde remarkably persevered through decades of revolving lineups, producing hits like "Back on the Chain Gang," "Don't Get Me Wrong," and the ballad "I'll Stand by You". Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, the band remains active today, with Hynde and Chambers continuing to record and tour, most recently releasing the album Relentless in 2023.
