Perfume Genius
Perfume Genius is the stage name of Mike Hadreas (born September 25, 1981), an acclaimed American singer-songwriter and musician known for his genre-defying art pop and indie rock that blends emotive vocals with intimate, often dark, lyrical themes. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in the Seattle area, Hadreas began his career in 2008 on MySpace after battling addiction and personal hardships. Releasing his debut album Learning in 2010, he gained critical acclaim for his raw piano-driven songs before evolving into a more flamboyant and experimental sound on albums like Too Bright (2014) and No Shape (2017). His work heavily explores themes of queer identity, trauma, and personal healing, often defying gender norms and challenging societal conventions. Throughout his career, which includes acclaimed albums like Set My Heart on Fire Immediately (2020) and Glory (2025), Hadreas has worked closely with his partner and producer, Alan Wyffels, to create, cathartic, and emotionally profound music.
