M.I.A. (Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam), born in 1975, is a British-Sri Lankan rapper, singer, and producer renowned for blending electro, hip-hop, and world music with politically charged commentary. A former refugee from the Sri Lankan Civil War, she gained prominence through the internet for hits like "Galang" and the Grammy-nominated "Paper Planes". Critically acclaimed for albums Arular and Kala, she is a pioneering artist noted for her activism and visual art, later appointed an MBE in 2019.
