Jurassic 5
Jurassic 5 is an American alternative hip-hop group formed in 1993 in Los Angeles, consisting of four rappers—Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir (Soup), and Marc 7—and two DJs/producers, DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist. Emerging from the vibrant open-mic scene at the Good Life Café, the six-member ensemble was born from the merger of two underground crews, the Unity Committee and the Rebels of Rhythm. They gained critical acclaim for their "old-school" aesthetic, characterized by positive lyrics, intricate four-part vocal harmonies, and jazz-influenced production that stood as an alternative to the dominant gangsta rap era. Their breakthrough came with their self-titled 1997 EP, followed by successful studio albums like Quality Control (2000) and the Billboard Top 15 hit Power in Numbers (2002), which featured the anthem "What's Golden". Although the group disbanded in 2007 due to musical differences, the full lineup officially reunited in 2013 for Coachella and continues to perform and release sporadic new material.
