John Denver
John Denver (1943–1997), born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., was a legendary American singer-songwriter, actor, and humanitarian who became one of the most beloved cultural icons of the 1970s. After gaining early success as the writer of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (a #1 hit for Peter, Paul and Mary), he launched a massive solo career defined by his clear tenor voice and heartfelt odes to nature, such as "Take Me Home, Country Roads," "Annie’s Song," and "Rocky Mountain High," the latter of which became an official state song of Colorado. Beyond his status as a top-selling recording artist, Denver was a dedicated activist who co-founded The Hunger Project and the Windstar Foundation, using his global platform to advocate for environmental conservation and world peace. An avid pilot, his life was cut tragically short at age 53 when his experimental aircraft crashed into Monterey Bay, California.
