Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH) was an iconic British synth-pop band formed in Liverpool in 1980 that became one of the most controversial and successful acts of the mid-1980s. Fronted by charismatic lead singer Holly Johnson alongside members Paul Rutherford, Mark O'Toole, Brian Nash, and Peter Gill, the group rose to global stardom under the production of Trevor Horn. They made music history by becoming only the second act ever to reach number one on the UK charts with their first three singles: the sexually provocative "Relax," the anti-war anthem "Two Tribes," and the ballad "The Power of Love". Despite, or perhaps because of, a high-profile BBC ban on "Relax," the band dominated the 1984 pop culture landscape, fueled by their iconic "Frankie Say Relax" slogan T-shirts. Their massive debut album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984), sold over a million copies in advance, but after a less successful second album, Liverpool (1986), internal tensions and legal battles led to an acrimonious split in 1987.
