Cocteau Twins
Cocteau Twins was a Scottish ethereal wave band formed in 1979 in Grangemouth, consisting of guitarist Robin Guthrie, bassist Will Heggie (later replaced by Simon Raymonde), and the incomparable vocalist Elizabeth Fraser. They became the definitive act for the 4AD record label during the 1980s and 90s, pioneering a lush, atmospheric "dream pop" sound characterized by Guthrie’s heavily processed, swirling guitar textures and Fraser’s extraordinary, operatic vocals that often featured abstract, glossolalic lyrics rather than conventional language. Their 1984 masterpiece Treasure and the critically acclaimed 1990 album Heaven or Las Vegas solidified their legacy as sonic innovators who bridged the gap between post-punk and alternative rock.
