Buzzcocks
Formed in Bolton, England, in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, Buzzcocks are a seminal English punk rock band recognized as pioneers of pop-punk and the independent record label movement. After playing a pivotal role in the early Manchester punk scene and releasing the influential self-produced EP Spiral Scratch on their own New Hormones label, the band developed a unique sound blending rapid-fire punk energy with melodic, romantic, and often witty songwriting, best exemplified by the 1978 hit "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)". Following Devoto's early departure to form Magazine in 1977, Shelley took over vocal duties, leading the band through acclaimed albums Another Music in a Different Kitchen and Love Bites before a 1981 breakup. Reforming in 1989, the band continued to tour and record for several decades, maintaining their reputation as influential punk architects, despite the sad passing of frontman Pete Shelley in 2018, with guitarist Steve Diggle subsequently leading the group.
